Pori Energia and Meritaito have entered into a comprehensive service agreement according to which Meritaito shall produce the remediation services in Kokemäenjoki river oil spill.
Meritaito is committed to safe, efficient and economical operations to minimize environmental damage using skilled personnel and appropriate remediation equipment.
Meritaito has a strong experience of oil spill prevention. The company has been producing 24/7 oil spill services for almost 30 years. In addition to being oil spill prevention experts, Meritaito’s multi-skilled professionals have decades of experience in shipping, such as fairway work in challenging conditions.
During the pre-Christmas period, Pori Energia's Harjavalta heating plant experienced an oil spill, which resulted in about 48 m³ of light fuel oil being discharged into the rainwater drain and then into Kokemäenjoki. Oil spill remediation work has continued throughout the day in Kokemäenjoki river. Some 8-15 m³ of light fuel oil has been collected by absorbing oil and removing oily ice.
The oil spill remediation work has been undertaken by a team of 10 people under the leadership of Kalle Bask. In addition, Meritaito has mobilised oil spill equipment to the site from several of its other bases. Oil spill remediation work continue, inter alia, by the installation of backup booms, the absorption of oil and oil skimming. The freezing of river water will slow down the oil spill remediation work.
Meritaito and Pori Energia will post regular updates on the remediation work in Harjavalta on their website.

The fairway itself – especially in Finland – is in a core role when accessing or departing a port. This possibly intelligent fairway can reduce many of the points highlighted in the 2030 vision. But it really has to be intelligent. We at Meritaito have analyzed this vision and validated the need from the fairway owners and users where as a reflection to this we created a project called InSea – Intelligent Sea
